Yikes! It’s been almost a month since I last posted (and did any coloring)…how did I let this happen! Oh well…time to get back on track with coloring on a regular basis.

So the last two days I finally had an opportunity to do some more coloring and in the process, I finished this version of “Fly Away With Me.”  Yay! Now that it’s done, it has a bit of an MC Escher look to it. I definitely want to do more of this style of coloring. I think I’ll do one of the hyperbolic tessellation ones next…they have lots more detail.

With yesterday’s coloring, I recorded me coloring in one of the outer sections so you could see the process.

Here’s the slideshow of my process over the last two days:

For days 3 and 4 started adding layers of detail. On day 3, I added spirals and curved lines to the “wings”. On day 4, I started adding much finer details to the inner bands of wings that were a bit of a challenge even with a .005 micron pen. The overall effect in the end should be cool. Actually I’m starting to see a pattern building with the background negative space.

I plan to video the next day of coloring…which will probably be on Monday.

Okay onto the next mandala coloring as part of my “ink drawing” series. This one is title “Fly Away With Me”. It’s a simplistic rendition of butterflies with overlapping upper and lower wings. Today I start with squiggly lines…my favorite.

Today, I finished version three of the “Wings” mandala. I worked on the small outer band (72 mini-windows) and fine-tuned other sections here and there.

Now to pick out the next one :-)  And with this one, I plan to video some or all of my progress…if I can set it up easily on my work table.

Today I finished the “dots” around the flying critter heads and start on the outside band. Tomorrow I should be able to finish this piece. It’s always fun to work on these and equally as fun to finish…so I can move onto the next one :-)

Finally had some time to continue coloring this version of “Wings“.  Most of the focus is on the “flying critters” for now. I have 6 more ‘critters’ to finish coloring…note the difference between the upper right area versus the lower left. Once I finish the critters, then it’s on to the border…which may take 1 or 2 days to do depending on how much time I give myself to color.

Here’s the second version of “Wings” that I did back a few years ago. Remember how the first one looked like a rose window? This one, to me, looks like a piece of Spanish tile. It still blows me away how just changing colors and changing the focus on different patterns within a design completely changes the whole look of a piece.

Made some more progress on this version of “Wings” today…mostly on the bodies of the flying critters. They seem to be taking on a bit of a mechanical look…steampunked.

Down below I posted an image of the first version I did of “Wings”

It’s been 2 days since the last time I worked on this piece…back to the drawing board today. Yay! Basically I’m continuing the coloring patterns I used in the center area to do on the outer sections. With where I ended today, you may start to see the abstract flying critter that is the premise for the name of this mandala: wings.

Yesterday I started working a third version of the “Wings” mandala. I’m continuing with using black ink markers to color. With this design having a lot more detail, it will take me a little longer to do than the last couple. This one is printed on an 8.5 x 11 piece of 110# card stock (a page out of the “In Flight” Mandala Coloring Book).

This went a lot faster than I expected. I finished this one today…finished coloring that is…I still have to figure out how I’m going to frame it or mount it. That’s for another day.

This and the two others like it (“Self-Fulfilling Prophecy” and “Hornpipes) are part of series I’m calling “Black and White and Read all Over”…a play on a joke that asks the question “what’s black and white and red all over?”
