Yikes! It’s been almost a month since I last posted (and did any coloring)…how did I let this happen! Oh well…time to get back on track with coloring on a regular basis.

So the last two days I finally had an opportunity to do some more coloring and in the process, I finished this version of “Fly Away With Me.”  Yay! Now that it’s done, it has a bit of an MC Escher look to it. I definitely want to do more of this style of coloring. I think I’ll do one of the hyperbolic tessellation ones next…they have lots more detail.

With yesterday’s coloring, I recorded me coloring in one of the outer sections so you could see the process.

Here’s the slideshow of my process over the last two days:

This version of “Echo” is on display throughout September 2011 at The Arts Center in downtown Corvallis, Oregon. The exhibition is entitled “Calculated Result – Mathematical Art”. I juried in 3 pieces for this show. All of which I’ll post on this blog. Today, it’s Echo’s turn.

“Echo” is a hyperbolic tessellation mandala. This version is 32″ diameter on 36″x36″ watercolor paper. I used watercolors, gouache, and markers to paint it.

This slideshow shows its progress from beginning to end.

Today I finished off another background section…the lower right hand side.  I used prismacolor canary yellow, yellow ocher, and black cherry to color in the background sections.  See part 4 for the step-by-step photos for the first background section.

The background area of this mandala is divided into 4 sections.  Today I worked on the upper left hand section, which includes the area within each triangle section of the center red diamond.

BTW…the message for this mandala is “Whatever you believe…IS”.  I’ll write more about this in a future posting.

This is part of the BIMLE series, #12. It represents how we create what we believe. I’ve struggled with the question of life. Why are we here? What are we suppose to do? What are we to believe? A friend told me that “life just is…it’s whatever you want it to be”, which reminded me of the Marvin Hamlisch song from the movie “Kotch”… “Life is what you make it, and what you make it, is up to you”.

On November 15, 2010 I started coloring this mandala using prismacolor pencils.  This slide show shows my progress on the 15th through 11/23.

On June 11, 12 and today I started and continued painting the “Excellence” Mandala.  I’m using artist-quality markers (prismacolor & tombow).  This mandala’s message is “Forget about perfection…Strive for Excellence.”

A wise holistic chiropractor once told me that perfection in the human form is unattainable.  Even if it was attainable, who’s standard would we use for perfection? mine? ours? our government? the latest fasionista?   He also stated that as spiritual beings, we are already perfect.  So seeking perfection is a waste of time and energy.

Excellence on the other hand is attainable and a worthy goal.  A good mantra along these lines is “every day, in every way I am getting better and better.

Today I finished 3 of the last 6 sections of orange on the “Bangles” mandala.

Painting these frames takes a while for me.  Because I’m wanting to have a smooth look to them, it takes me longer to paint an even blend of the cad. yellow medium, dioxazine purple, and cad. red medium.  I also painted the smaller orange diamond with is just outside the photo to the lower right.

I finished 4 more sections of orange today.  It’s taking me a lot longer to paint the orange sections than I would like.  The cad. red medium tends to overtake any other colors I uses, in particular that yellows.  I have to put gobs of yellow on because if even a touch of the cad. red touches the yellow, the power of the yellow diminishes rapidly and turns into orange.  That’s okay if I’m trying to make more orange; it’s a problem when I want more of the yellow to show.  Anyway…it’s showing me where I need to practice more and learn how these paints work together.

These two areas are opposite the triangle frame and chevron I painted yesterday.

It took me about an hour to paint these two orange frames.  Now that I’m wanting a smoother texture to these areas it takes longer to get a good blend between the cad. red medium, cad. yellow, and dioxazine purple.

Here’s the full view.  Of the oranges, the upper right section of orange is now done as are the two orange triangle frames and chevrons.   I’m expecting to complete the 6 orange sections by day 74.  That’s the plan anyway.

Yeah!  I’m back!  I took back my power of the fear of continuing to paint this mandala.  It was one of those things where I let myself lack confidence in my ability to paint.  When I realized that even if I “ruined” it, I could just paint over it…acrylics is wonderful that way.

Okay so today I continued in the orange sections.  When I painted the first layer of orange, I mostly just dabbed the paint on giving it an impressionistic look.  For some reason, I feel the need to paint a smooth clean layer of paint for the second coat.

In this photo you can see the smoother looker to the diamonds and the impressionistic look to the bottom orange frames, which have yet to be re-painted.   I’m using cad. red medium, cad. yellow, and dioxazine purple.

And here’s the completed orange frame around the blue triangle along with the orange chevron (book) shape.

I took a few days off from painting the “Bangles” mandala. Partly it was a timing issue and partly/mostly I was intimidated with painting the orange frames. I actually started them on day 55 and stopped half way through painting the first orange frame.

The left and bottom sides looked completely different from the top and right sides style-wise.  It looked as if two different people painted it.  It freaked me out because I felt that I was clueless as to what I am doing.

Today I took the advice from a title of one of my favorite books:  “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.”  After a few tries at it I all started to fall into place.

In this photo you can see the two orange frames I painted on the left and parts of the two frames yet to be painted on the right.  This gives you a good idea of the fine tuning that was done today.
