Yikes! It’s been almost a month since I last posted (and did any coloring)…how did I let this happen! Oh well…time to get back on track with coloring on a regular basis.

So the last two days I finally had an opportunity to do some more coloring and in the process, I finished this version of “Fly Away With Me.”  Yay! Now that it’s done, it has a bit of an MC Escher look to it. I definitely want to do more of this style of coloring. I think I’ll do one of the hyperbolic tessellation ones next…they have lots more detail.

With yesterday’s coloring, I recorded me coloring in one of the outer sections so you could see the process.

Here’s the slideshow of my process over the last two days:

Today I finished the “dots” around the flying critter heads and start on the outside band. Tomorrow I should be able to finish this piece. It’s always fun to work on these and equally as fun to finish…so I can move onto the next one :-)

It’s been 2 days since the last time I worked on this piece…back to the drawing board today. Yay! Basically I’m continuing the coloring patterns I used in the center area to do on the outer sections. With where I ended today, you may start to see the abstract flying critter that is the premise for the name of this mandala: wings.

This went a lot faster than I expected. I finished this one today…finished coloring that is…I still have to figure out how I’m going to frame it or mount it. That’s for another day.

This and the two others like it (“Self-Fulfilling Prophecy” and “Hornpipes) are part of series I’m calling “Black and White and Read all Over”…a play on a joke that asks the question “what’s black and white and red all over?”

As I woke up yesterday morning, an image of the completed Hornpipes mandala flashed in my mind and I knew what I needed to do to finish it.

Hornpipes: Day 4

First go at the “wood” paneling around the mandala

Hornpipes: Day 4 - 2

Defined the paneling a bit more and then added words and phrases

Hornpipes: Day 4 - 3

You may be wondering about the dancing reference and this mandala. As an Irish step dancer in my youth we learned many Irish dances including the hornpipe. All of them were lively and fun to do. You can read all about them on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornpipe.

This mandala reminds us to put more joy in our step…why walk when we can dance?

I started “inking” another mandala entitled “Hornpipes”…it’s an asymmetrical mandala design.

I neglected to post the first two days as I completed them so I opted to post all 3 days here. At the moment this mandala appears to be done however I feel like there’s something else that’s left to be done. I’ll let it sit for a couple of days and let it tell me what it needs.

I worked on this piece yesterday but ran out time to post it so I decided to post it with today’s coloring. I finished inking all the “pipes”. I’d like to say I’m done with this piece and yet I feel like it needs a little extra something. I’ll let it go for today and ponder this tomorrow.

Today I completed the last quadrant of the center section…thus completing the center of this mandala. I then started on the last ‘section’ of the mandala: the “pipes”. I wanted them to have more depth and texture. While it’s bit tedious to do, I really like the effect and I experience a meditative state with the continuous placement of small lines inside each pipe.

Also while I do this, the intention and insight of this mandala become more concrete. I will share more about this when I finish it.

I’m now into the 2nd week of ‘coloring’ this version of the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy mandala. Just in case you were wondering, I’m using 140lb cold press watercolor paper for this rendering.

So today I focused on detailing the center sections. I finished 3 quadrants. Tomorrow I’ll finish the 4th (lower left) and then start on the “pipes”.
