A continuation of the “Color Wheel Project”

Part 1 of this Post explains the project and displays a slideshow of the watercolor version of the “Yellow Jacket” mandala color wheel.

All-in-all I enjoyed doing this project and will probably play with it some more in the future…trying different brands of paint along with doing them in color pencil, markers, and/or oils.

Color Wheel Project – Part 1

The Color Wheel Company asked me to use one of my mandalas to demonstrate the difference between coloring with red, yellow, blue vs. magenta, cyan, yellow. I opted to do 2 versions: watercolors and acrylics, using the “Yellow Jacket” mandala. I painted 1/2 of each mandala with red/yellow/blue and the other half with magenta/yellow/cyan.

Over 3 days, I completed both of these paintings. In the process I learned the following things:

I need to improve the lighting for painting
I need to improve my photography skills to better line up the images I take
I prefer using magenta, cyan and yellow…the colors are much brighter and seem more true (IMHO)
It seems that when I use the RBY combo, the colors come out warmer and the CMY combo creates cooler colors. I could see the value in using either combo depending on the desired outcome of the painting
Until this project, I rarely used black…mostly just to outline designs. Adding varying degrees of black to the colors gave me a deeper range of colors.
I found a big difference between using a slightly translucent acrylic black (bone black) vs opaque acrylic carbon black
It’s okay to change my mind as I go through the project (you’ll see what I mean when you see the acrylic slideshows)
Listen to the voice in my head that said I needed another photo of the completed acrylics version…I talked myself out of it thinking I had already done it. If I had just taken a moment to view the images on my camera I would have noticed that I needed to take one more photo. The painting is now on its way to Orlando. When it returns at the end of the month, I’ll add it to the slideshow.

I highly recommend doing a color wheel…you’ll get a better understanding of colors and how you only need a few colors to make all the colors you’ll ever need.

“NahVee” Coloring

The movie “Avatar” inspired this hyperbolic tessellation mandala. In one of the scenes, the Navi people encircled a fire, with arms reaching forward to the person in front of them. The power of that scene motivated me to create the essence of that grouping.

For this coloring of it, I wanted to create a pen & ink look…more like an illustration…and then color over it with color pencils. I used a scribble stroke to ink in the shadow areas. This mandala measures 32″ in diameter on 36″ square paper; so it’s quite large for a color pencil piece. I painted it in three days 3/24, 25, 27/2011.

I apologize in advance for the poor quality of some of the images. Here’s a slide show of my progress on this painting:

I enjoyed making this piece especially using the ink markers to create scribbles for the shadow areas. I plan to do this style again.

“Butterflies” Coloring

I used a simplistic drawing of a butterfly and converted into this hyperbolic tessellation mandala. For this coloring of it, I wanted to create a pen & ink look…more like an illustration…and then color over it with color pencils. For this mandala, I used a stippling (lots of dots) stroke to create the shadow areas (very tedious). This mandala measures 32″ in diameter on 36″ square paper; so it’s quite large for a color pencil piece. I painted it in four days 3/21-24/2011.

“Seashells She Sells” Coloring

2011 MotY Section 2 Day 7

Today I finished the last 2 pieces of Section 2 of the 2011 Mandala of the Year. Along with coloring these two shapes, I also puts some shading on the large orb, making it appear that these two pieces are floating above or by the orb. Tomorrow I plan to post the Section 3 design for coloring during the month of March (or whenever you can get to it)

2011 MotY Section 2 Day 3

Finished coloring the large orb in Section 2 of the 2011 Mandala of the Year; one section of blue and two different greens for the other two sections. With this coloring I add texture lines and dots to give the sections more depth, making them more interesting…IMHO

‘In Union’ Mandala Painting

I created this painting as a wedding gift. While meditating on the couple’s wedding day and their upcoming marriage this design came to me. After drawing it, I traced it onto a 12″ x 12″ x 2″ panel board. These slides show the progression from beginning to end, including the leather frame my husband carved and attached around the outside edges of the panel.

About halfway through painting it, I kept hearing the same words over and over again in my head and realized that they go with this mandala: love, honor, trust, joy, and kindness. I also realized that the words needed to be included in the painting. During their wedding ceremony last week, the officiate of the ceremony talked about seeds of a marriage: loving kindness, compassion, joy and freedom. I sense that the words of this mandala also act as seeds for a successful relationship, whether it be a marriage, partnership, friendship, and probably more importantly our relationship with ourselves.

2011 Mandala – Section 1 Day 3

Today I added colors to the attached orbs in the upper portion of Section 1 of the 2011 Mandala of the Year.

I use prismacolor pencils for coloring. For the orange orbs, I used canary yellow and scarlet lake. For the green orbs, I used canary yellow and copenhagen blue.

ATC: Gemstones 1-6

I completed this series on 7/6/2010. Here’s how the 6 Gemstone ATCs go together.

ATC Gemstones 1-6

It goes 1 – 3 across the top, and 4-6 on the bottom. Each card is 2.5″ x 3.5″. I created the overall design by putting all the blank cards together and lightly drew it out crossing over the edges.
