On June 27, I continued to color and finish this version of the “Excellence” mandala which is #4 of the BIMLE series [I'll explain what that is some other time].

On June 28 through June 30, I started painting the “Beauty” mandala which is #5 in the BIMLE series (I’ll explain what that means at another time). For this painting I’m using watercolor crayons. However rather than coloring directly onto the paper, I’m grabbing and painting with a wet brush from the crayon.
Structurally, I designed this to have 5 repeated segments. Normally I use 12. Even numbered segments give a piece a solid, even shape, using odd numbers does as well…you just need to know how to see it. With an odd number, one segment is at the bottom (or top), then the remain segments along the left and right sides, mirror each other. It’s an interesting phenomenon…at least to me anyway.
The basis for the mandala is to see beyond the surface to find the true beauty of someone or something. Too often I catch myself judging from first impressions rather than taking time to know and understand what/who is before me.

On June 28, I started painting the “All a Flutter” mandala. I’m using Zig brand scrapbook markers. This design is a hyperbolic tessellation which you can read more about on my hyperbolic tesselations web site. MC Escher used the concept of hyperbolic tessellation for his Circle Limit series, “Angels and Demons” being his most popular one.
I called this “All a Flutter” because the pattern reminds me of an image of flapping hummingbird wings as if captured via a high-speed camera.

On June 11, 12 and today I started and continued painting the “Excellence” Mandala. I’m using artist-quality markers (prismacolor & tombow). This mandala’s message is “Forget about perfection…Strive for Excellence.”
A wise holistic chiropractor once told me that perfection in the human form is unattainable. Even if it was attainable, who’s standard would we use for perfection? mine? ours? our government? the latest fasionista? He also stated that as spiritual beings, we are already perfect. So seeking perfection is a waste of time and energy.
Excellence on the other hand is attainable and a worthy goal. A good mantra along these lines is “every day, in every way I am getting better and better.

I’m back to painting mandalas again. This time it’s the “True Warrior” mandala. It’s message is “Be strong of heart. Still the mind. Be of joyful spirit.” To me it has a strong Native American feel to it, although it could apply to almost any indigenous culture.
For this painting I’m using watercolor crayons (Staedtler & Caran d’Ache brands). I use a wet watercolor brush, pull some color from the crayon and then apply the paint to the paper. If an area is large enough, I’ll color in the area with the crayon directly onto the paper and then use a wet watercolor brush to spread the color.
It may be a bit difficult to see the outline in these photos. To see a better view, go to www.TheMandalaLady.com/to_color/viewall.php?gallery=1 then mouse over the small icons towards the bottom of the group and select “True Warrior”. (the mandalas are in alphabetical order)
