Today was the last day of this project. I had a blast (pun intended) designing, building and painting it. You’ll be able to view it at several pre-da Vinci Days events. Then during da Vinci Days (www.davinci-days.org) it will be part of the Avenue of Imagination where many community art projects related to the theme “Space Odyssey” will be on display (July 16-18).

Left Side with Blue
I painted in the Left Side with Blue.
Front Side with Blue

Right Side with Blue

Here Comes the Sun
Now that the blue is done, Here Comes the Sun. I paint the outer edge of the sun and the bottom edges of the flames with red.
The Red of the Sun
Here’s a side view of The Red of the Sun and it’s flames.
Close-up of the Red
In this Close-up of the Red, you can see how I painted full red along the edge of the line, and then lighter as I painted to the center. To paint lighter, I removed as much paint as I could off the brush and then lightly dry brushed, allowing some of the primed layer to show through.
The Orange Layer
For The Orange Layer, I painted over the lighter red areas and further into the sun and flames. I did overlap some orange on the solid red areas as well, creating an orangey red. As with the red layer, I lightly dry brushed orange into the area where the yellow will go.

In the sun, I painted the quest for the Space Oddities…”Alpha Centauri of Bust“
Adhering the Base
Gerry, my wonderful husband, helped me with Adhering the Base to the body of the project. This gives the wings of this project more depth and dimension. We used Guerilla Glue (new experience) and then clamped the base to the body.

Masking the Back Side
Here I’m Masking the Back Side to prepare it for spray painting.
The Base
I spray painted The Base with black paint.

After another coat of black paint and removal of the paper, The Back Side is Revealed.
Black Outline
Using a black marker, I painted a Black Outline all over the body. This is the right side view.
The Front Side Outline

Here’s The Left Side View. I modeled this rocket after a 1960′s samba volkswagen van, which, to me, is the most interesting of all their vans.

The Primer Coat
When you look at the larger view of this image, you’ll better see The Primer Coat that I started on the top of the body. Thankfully I had some left over lightly tinted primer paint in the garage that I could use for this project.
All Primed
Now the entire project is All Primed. Applying the primer paint to the paper towel layer, gives the skin of the project the feel of a paint canvas, which will make it easier to apply paint.

Drawing the Outline
Here I started Drawing the Outline using a purple watercolor pencil (you may need to look at the larger view to see it). Normally I use a grey w/c pencil however it’s decided to be some place other than where I needed it to be. I like to draw with a w/c pencil because as the paint hits the pencil lines they become absorbed and erased from the canvas.

Second Layer
I put a Second Layer of paper cross-wise on the project base. For this layer I used paper towels…because I read on the ‘net that it makes a great final layer, the edges are smoother. At first it was okay and then it turned into a major hassle…by dipping a torn piece of paper towel into the liquid starch, it quickly absorbed the liquid and then the torn edging started to curl. I also was doing this outside on the patio…where it was windy, adding to the hassle. After about 30 minutes of this it occurred to me that I could skip the dipping part and just brush on the starch onto the first layer and then lay a piece of paper down, which would immediately attach itself to the liquid. This made the whole process easier and faster; I also used a lot less starch. When I finished laying the paper, then I brushed the starch over the entire base, which then blended the paper edges to each other.
Fourth Layer
Now on to the Fourth Layer of the body. When you view the larger version of this image, you’ll better see how the paper towel nicely conforms to the shape beneath it. As with the base, I brushed on the liquid starch, then added the paper towels. When all the paper towels were in place, I then brushed a layer of starch over the whole body to blend the papers together.

This is Day 5 of the continuing saga of the creation of the “Space Oddities” project for the 2010 da Vinci Days Avenue of Imagination Community Art Project.

Bottom Panels
Today I started out by cutting out 2 Bottom Panels that will be sandwiched together and then eventually glued to the bottom of the project.
The Center
Using some left over brown packing paper, I taped crumpled pieces to one side of one panel which will become The Center of the 2 panels. I spaced them out to give a more even coverage.
The Sandwich
I line up the other panel and tape it in place to make The Sandwich.
Sandwich Wrap
For the skin of the sandwich edges and bottom, I used pieces of wax paper to make a “Sandwich Wrap“.
Sandwich Wrap 2
To make it easier to go around corners, I use narrower pieces of wax paper.
The Edge
The Edge and the unseen side are now completely covered with wax paper.
The Corners
To help smooth out The Corners, I use pieces of masking tape.
First Layer
For the First Layer of paper mache, I used strips of newsprint paper, which was what I used on the second layer of the body of this project.

In this view of the First Layer, you can better see the strips of paper. I laid them vertically.
Dried Second Layer
Yesterday I had finished applying the newsprint paper. This view shows the Dried Second Layer of the body of the project.
Another View
Here’s Another View of the project from the side. With this solid color of paper it will be easy for me to see where I need to apply the third layer of paper.
Third Layer
I completed the Third Layer using the paper from the color newsprint ads (non-shiny) from the Sunday newspapers. I also made the strips larger…about 2″x10″. So far this has been the easiest paper I’ve used, I could actually stretch and maneuver it around odd shapes and corners better than with the other two papers I had used.
