Today I fine-tuned the red floating shapes on the left side of the mandala.  On the first layer I used naphtol red; for this layer I used quinacridone red which is a little bit brighter with more blue in it.  That and dioxazine purple are the only two colors I used.

HEADS UP:  I’ll be at the Corvallis Art Guild Clothesline Art Sale all day tomorrow (day 49).  The plan is to have this painting on display at the sale.  If I do, I’ll provide a photo.  Day 50 I’ll be back to painting it again.

Here’s a close up of one of the red floaty things I painted today.

This photo shows the four red shapes that I fine-tuned today.

And the full view.  If you look closely you’ll see the four red shapdes on the right appear much flatter than the four shapes on the left.   Before I paint the right side red shapes, I’ll be sure to take a before close-up photo so you can see better the difference.

[Due to excessive heat, I skipped painting on Days 45 & 46]

Today I finished the fine tuning of the yellow sections…in particular the yellow (to orange/red) diamond shapes at the 4 o’clock position of the Bangles mandala.  The fine tuning involves straightening edges and adding another layer of white, cad. yellow light, cad. yellow, cad. red medium light, and dioxazine purple.

Here is the view of the completed yellow diamonds section (the purple areas are awaiting their turn at fine-tuning).

Today I made the foolish mistake of waiting until after 12 noon to paint…for those of you outside of Oregon you may have trouble understanding why that was foolish…as I write this post (3:23 pm PT) it’s 102 degrees outside…in OREGON!  So it was probably in the upper 90′s when I went out to the patio to paint.  Tomorrow I’ll be out there by 8 am…it’s suppose to be even hotter tomorrow…yikes!  We average mid 80′s this time of year around here.

But I digress…the important thing was that I continued to paint the Bangles mandala.  As I stated in yesterday’s post, now it’s all about the fine-tuning.  I continued working the yellow areas, in particular the 3 diamond shapes in the upper left to center of the mandala.

In this close up where I cleaned up the edges of the yellow diamond, along with putting an edge line between the diamond and the upper diamond (which goes out of view) and another line between the yellow and red diamonds in the center.  I also applied another layer of  colors (titanium white, cad. yellow light, cad. yellow, cad. red medium, and diaxozine purple).

For a comparison, here’s a photo of the opposite yellow diamond that is awaiting its fine tuning (tomorrow).

This photo shows the three diamonds I fine tuned today.  For the 2 with the purple centers, I added another layer of colors (same as the center yellow diamond) and cleaned up the outer edges.  If you look at the other shapes in the photo, you’ll see that their edges are messy from the white layer I added to the background a couple of weeks ago.

Here’s the full view.  Tomorrow the plan is to repeat what I did today to the 3 diamonds in the lower right section of the mandala.

Yeah!  Today I’m back to painting the Bangles Mandala.  I spent my time fine-tuning the 4 darker yellow shapes; 2 in the upper left section, 2 in the lower right section. I used cad. yellow and dioxazine purple for these shapes, with a little titanium white for the highlight.

Since it’s a little more difficult to detect the difference of the fine-tuning, unless you go back and look at previous photos, I’ve provided a before and after view.  Here’s the before:

Before Fine-Tuning

Before Fine-Tuning

Here’s after the fine tuning.  I made the edges crisper, made the lower left sides darker (to provide more contrast), and added a little more shadow along the long right side to make it look like it’s embedded in the frame.

After Fine-Tuning

After Fine-Tuning

Here’s a view of one of the lower right darker yellow shapes.

Stepping back a little, I took this photo of the pair of yellow shapes that are in the lower right section of the mandala.  The poor quality of this photo makes it look like the yellow/purple shape on the left was painted with different colors than the one on the right.  They are both painted the same.  The different color backgrounds may be altering the coloration.

Okay…so the plan was to get back painting the Bangles Mandala on day 41.   Plan B was to start on day 42.  Both plans failed to happen.  Sorry.

Day 42 was actually spent at the riverfront park next to the farmer’s market where I was able to recruit enough people to help me finish the last 28 squares of the Intuitive Coloring Mural #2.  Yeah!  See this blog for more info & photo

Today I went down to our local farmer’s market for a couple of hours and setup the intuitive coloring mural on a picnic table under the trees with the plan to have the remaining 28 squares filled in. It took about an hour after I was there for it to finally take off. By 11:30 am, the mural was done! Yeah!

It took three days [22 hours] of gluing 700+ fish to this 15′x5′ piece of fabric to complete the ‘Big’ Fish Tessellation project for da Vinci Days.

Here it is!  It took my husband, Gerry, good friend Steve, and I 45 minutes to set this up.  From what I understand it was a big hit!

For the last 9 days I’ve been heavily involved in da Vinci days related projects and spending time with a good friend visiting from out of town.  Tomorrow, Day 41, I’m back on track.  To those of you following this project, I appreciated your patience and support.

[I'm 10 days behind in posting this]

Today [7/14/09] I continued to work on fine tuning the bright yellow shapes…in particular, the two lower right ones.  The process was a matter of adding varying amounts of cad. yellow light and dioxazine purple and working the edges and developing more of a 3D shape to them.

Even with the photo being a little blurry you can still make out the cleaner edges of the yellow shape along with it have a little more depth to it.

This is the other yellow shape in the lower right area of the mandala.  It too is a little blurry…sorry.

This yellow triangle shape is in the middle right section of the mandala.  My hand was steadier for this photo.

At this distance it becomes more difficult to see the fine tuning that’s being done on this piece.  However, if you look at the lower right yellow shapes from day 29/30 and then look at this one, you can see that the edges of the yellow shapes are crisper.

[I'm 12/11 days behind in posting this]

I have either forgotten to take photos or I accidentally deleted the photos from day 29.  So these photos will show both days’ progress.  For day 29 [7/12/09], I finished added the white overlay to the red and blue backgrounds.  For day 30 [7/13/09], I began the refining portion of the painting, namely the yellow objects in the purple frames.

This photo shows the lighter blue background with the white dabbed over it and the more defined yellow section.  I added more cad. yellow light and dioxazine purple to fine-tune the edges and give it more depth and shape.

This lighter red background was completed during day 28 so I only worked on the yellow shape in this photo.

This photo shows the more defined yellow triangle which appears in the mid-left section of the mandala.

With this full view you can see all the lighter background sections (yellow, red, & blue).   From this vantage point it’s a little more difficult to detect the fine tuning done on the upper left bright yellow shapes.
