I completed the Tlingit Salmon for the da Vinci Days Avenue of Imagination.  The following photos show the finishing lines and set it up for hanging.

This was a fun and different (for me) project to do.   Now onto the next project!  :-)

Now that I finished the first side, it’s time to work on the other side of my Tlingit Salmon project. If you look closely you’ll see the light gray outline of the design.

I start by painting in all the black areas.

Then I paint the red areas.

Then I paint in the green sections.

I then paint over the white areas.  This allows me to clean up any rough edges.  From this vantage point, it may be only slightly detectable.

Almost done.  Once it dries I will add the thin black and red lines to finish it off.

Since my last post, I have been informed that the art style I’m creating here is Tlingit versus Inuit (5/27 I updated all my posts to change out all Inuit references to Tlingit).   I humbly stand (or sit) corrected.

So in this session I painted the white area, cleaned up the edges, added a second coat of green, and tweaked the red/black areas

Added white & tweaked the rest

Added white & tweaked the rest

Last thing to do on this side is to put in thin black outer lines to the red ovoids at the eye, nose, on the tail, and lower fins.

Then I get to do this all over again on the other side.

Today I painted the red and green sections of the salmon.   They may need additional coats of both colors.  In case you’re interested, I’m using Winsor & Newton Acrylic paint (naphthol crimson, phtalo green, and mars black).

Added some red & green

Today I sketched out the salmon in the style of Inuit Indian Art.  My design came from research on the web in particular http://www.FreeSpiritGallery.ca, an ebook by Clint Cora “Overview of Pacific Northwest Native American Art”, and from the book “Northwest Coast Indian Art” by Bill Holm

Normally with Pacific NW NA Art the outside shape of their art is usually less detailed.  When I was working on the other salmon (Sammie), I had Gerry cut out two salmons so I’d have one as a backup.  Since I created Sammie in one take, I decided to make use of the extra salmon.

Using a light gray Derwent color pencil, I sketched the outline onto the primed salmon.  In order for you to be able see the outline, I had to take a close-up photo and darken the image.

Now the fun part!  Adding paint.  I used black acrylic paint to put down the first coat of the background.

I have to say I’m liking it already!  More tomorrow.

I’ve started another fish project for da Vinci Days Avenue of Imagination and in a different style: Tlingit/Pacific NW

First step? Cut out the fish.  My husband, Gerry, cut this design out on 1/4″ plywood.

Step 1: Cut out the fish

Step 1: Cut out the fish

Step 2: Prime the fish

Step 2: Prime the fish

Step 2: Prime the fish

Next step…create the design…coming soon.
