I finished coloring in all the spaces on this painting.

Full-View Image
I took this photo in poor light so it’s a bit grainy. The last areas that I filled were the upper right hand corner, the lower right hand corner, and then the background areas in the lower left, middle, upper middle, and mid right.

Close-up View
This is the lower left section where I added the background coloring…the yellowish w/redish accents…it looks like a tablecloth or wallpaper. I used lemon yellow, canary yellow, and yellow ochre for the yellow; black cherry for the shading, and raspberry for the accents.

Close-up View
This is the lower right section where if did the blue, orange, and green (lower right) sections; as well as the background ‘tablecloth’ For the blue I used copenhagen blue, cloud blue, black grape, blender and white. For the orange, I used canary yellow, scarlet lake, black cherry, and white. For the green ring, I used canary yellow, true blue, black grape, and white. For the flat dark green area, I used canary yellow, indigo blue, and black grape.

Close-up View #3
In the upper right corner I put in the green, orange, blue sections; along with the maroon-y red and red thing coming out of the bird’s beak…at least that’s how I see it
The last step will be to go back over it to do some tweaking throughout. The plan is to have it done by today (3/31/09).

Today I had a particularly long session of coloring. Yeah!

Full-size View
I did most of the coloring in the upper & mid right section of the painting. If you look at my last post to this blog for this painting (3/20/09), you’ll see the big difference in this area. I even took the liberty of changing the color in two areas that were yellow…I made them into green.

Detail View #1
I did so much coloring that I had to split the detail into two images. This image shows where I completed two rings of colors to the right of the “bird”, the orange section with the hole in it, the blue that’s behind it, and two patches of green at the bottom. The patch of green on the right was originally a light yellow ochre color.

Detail View #2
This image shows the lower half of this coloring session. Because of the way the four background green sections were colored, it looks like they are all one piece behind the rings that are above them. Only two of these sections were originally designated as green (upper left & lower right). The other two were light yellow (lower left) and light yellow ochre (upper right).
NOTE: About the greens that I use? I don’t. All my greens were achieved by using different shades of yellow and blue. The greens seem more interesting this way.
NOTE: Ditto for oranges…All oranges were made with yellows and reds.
The area I completed is the extension of the greenish-blue cone shape in the right mid-section; the red to orange. I also changed the light/shadow direction.
NOTE: To shadow purists….I took extreme liberties with the directions of light and shadow throughout this hole piece. Rather than be true to only one light source and thus one shadow direction, I put shadows where I felt like shadows wanted to go.
‘Til the next time….Happy Coloring!

From 3/10-3/15 I had the pleasure of going to visit a friend who lives on the Oregon coast; and for a few days I had time to myself…what a treat! While I was there I created and painted a new asymmetry mandala called “Sisters.” My friend Diane is like a sister to me and this design reflects how we go in and out of each other’s lives. We’re lucky to see each other about 2-3 times a year and when we do get together it’s as if we see each all the time.
In Oregon, “Sisters” has another meaning…the name of a town and it’s the name of the three mountains that are right outside of Sisters. View photo of Sisters. It’s a beautiful area. While the downtown is quaint and there’s plenty of outdoor activities to do, to me it’s the trek out to the lava fields that’s the most amazing site to see.
I was able to complete this painting in two days. It’s about 7 inches in diameter and it was painted with watercolor pencils. I won a new set of derwent inktense watercolor pencils and decided to try them out on this painting. The colors are quite nice and the pencils were easy to use.
I did the whole painting in three sessions.
SESSION 1: 3/13

Sisters Mandala: Session 1
I first drew out the mandala with a light grey pencil and painted my first layer/wash of color in each section. With each section, I used the watercolor pencil dry to fill in the area and then used a wet brush to spread the color. For anyone who is nervous about doing watercolor paintings, play with watercolor pencils first…it will ease you in nicely to watercolors.
SESSION 2 – 3/14

Sisters Mandala: Session 2
To give each section a little more depth and shape, I used a darker color or purple in the top and left sides of each section.
SESSION 3 – 3/14

Sisters Mandala: Session 3
For this final session, I re-applied the original color wash over each section. So where I had painted yellow in SESSION 1, I re-painted over that section with yellow again…and so on for each color.
Did you notice that the painting is upside down from the first two photos? That’s because I actually painted it upside-down. I would love to say that I had a very clever reason for doing so but the reality is I drew it as you see it here in SESSION 3; however when I secured the paper to my masonite board, I had put the paper on upside-down. Rather that take it off and re-apply it, I went the “go with the flow” mode and painted it upside down. To be honest I’m glad I did.
‘Til next time, Happy Coloring!

It’s been about 4.5 months since I last colored this painting…I feel like I’m in a confessional. A lot has happened since then and now everything is in place for me to continue AND FINISH this piece; especially since I want to submit this to an international color pencil show…the deadline is 3/31.
(as a side note…I’m using a different camera and I’m needing to perfect my skill with it a bit more)
03.14.2009 1st session

Full-size View
I mostly worked in the upper mid-section, where the large purple ring is with the light blue background. It took me about an hour to color the three concentric circles (light blue, orange, and red), the light blue area and the purple ring.

detailed view
In this detailed view you can see more of what I did. Throughout this piece I’m using a variety of strokes and textures: the purple is a burnished line stroke, the red is a more solid burnish stroke, and the light blue and orange areas are a loose circle stroke.
03.14.2009 2nd session

Full-size View
During this session I felt a little more whimsical and did this strange bird creature near the upper right hand corner. If you look at the previous photo, you’ll see what it looked like before I colored it.

Detail View
Here you can see the ‘bird’ more clearly. It has a red face, a high-top plume with a blue band, an orange color and a blue beak. The more I colored in this area, the more this guy came to life. Along with coloring the ‘bird’ I also added to the circles to the left of the bird’s head, adding the green, gold, reddish-purple and maroon arcs.
03.15.2009

Full-size View
It’s a little more difficult to see where I’ve colored, it’s mostly smaller sections below the big purple ring in the upper mid-section. The detail will show it more.

Detail View
If you compare this to the detailed image earlier in this post, you can see where I’ve added more color. To me I mostly created to abstract fish (green in the upper middle, and the red/purple/gold fish just below it). I also did more arc sections below them and the background purple.
03.16.2009

Full-size View
(as you may notice, I still need some more time with the camera manual). For this session I focused on the areas around the ‘bird’ in the upper right hand corner; mostly the ring segments to the left of the bird and below the bird.

Detail View
This whole area is finally coming together. I love playing with shadows, using them to determine which section is behind or in front of which section. In the lower gold arc below the bird, I made it look like the dark blue segment of the bird is stretched out over the gold arc and connected to the green cone shape. Without the shadow, the dark blue section would look like it’s in line with the gold and light blue arcs. The shadow gives it more depth.
